ISLE OF WIGHT INSIDER – THE GREEN CON FLAG AWARD – It’s bloody dangerous!

Exposing the dangers concerning Appley Park, Ryde, where the council run a pitch and putt course endangering residents and visitors alike in a public park that was bequeathed to the people of Ryde for their use as a recreational area which is out of the question during the summer months is too dangerous due to complete novices hitting golf balls about at will with the blessing of the council.

The video is concerning the perimeter path running around the pitch & putt coarse and although it is outside the area of the warning notices it is regardless very dangerous due to flying golf balls, this partly due to the poor design of the course (the path runs behind the first green and closely parallel to the fifth hole) but mainly to the unsuitability of using a public park to house a golf course where there is no prerequisite for the participants to have ever played golf.

ECO ISLAND? ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL – ALL TALK?

This is the second video in the ECO ISLAND? series and examines one small area in which our respected and revered leaders, and the contractors acting on their behalf, are pointlessly wasting resources and causing unnecessary damage to the environment regardless of their claims.

In fact far from being “Eco Island” the Isle of Wight council are responsible for allowing the Island to become an exceptionally wasteful and environmentally unfriendly place. To the casual observer, beaches may simply appear as barren stretches of sand – beautiful, but largely devoid of life or ecological processes. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Sandy beaches not only provide habitat for numerous species of plants and animals, they also serve as breeding grounds for many species that are not residential to the beach.

HAS UNDERCLIFF SAGA ERODED TRUST? NOT THE FIRST TIME WAS IT?

It is a scandal that has rocked an island community, threatening to hit taxpayers’ pockets by potentially millions of pounds. It resulted in the suspension of seven council officers, including the deputy chief executive, followed by sackings, a resignation and an early retirement.

A nine-month internal investigation has now been completed into why the Isle of Wight Council was able to award a multi-million pound contract to an international firm – High Point Rendel (HPR) – without any tendering process. This broke both EU and UK law, as well as the council’s own constitution.

ISLANDERS VOTED HEAVILY IN FAVOUR OF RETAINING SCHOOLS WITHIN LOCAL COMMUNITIES

People who responded to the Council’s questionnaire are realising that their views are not being taken seriously as the council chooses to use their representations to press for a two tier system which under the Councils model will lead to the closure of many rural primary schools and the creation of much larger schools all round including 1800 place secondary schools that are almost twice the size of what are accepted as reasonable in most other local authorities.

Whilst 88% of respondents thought it was “fairly or very important to retain schools within local communities” and 80% thought it was “fairly or very important to reduce the need for younger pupil travel”, these views were not reflected in the Council’s press release or mentioned by Alan Wells in his early morning statement broadcast on Isle of Wight Radio. Instead he chose to use the questionnaire result as a vote of confidence in Option 3. REORGANISATION COULD COST TAXPAYERS £2.5m MORE EACH YEAR!

Research released by SNT on their website www.yourschoolneedsyou.com shows that the council tax payer may need to find £2.4m each year as a result of plans to close schools on the Isle of Wight.

SNT are challenging Alan Wells’ statement published in the County Press and say closing small schools will do almost nothing to improve spend per head figures. The research shows that overall, only £34 will be released for each child, amounting to just £612,448 saved each year. Extraordinarily that is less than 10p per child per day. (more…)

COUNCIL NETS £4M FROM US IN PARKING CHARGES (1 YEAR)

The Island’s Council pocketed nearly £4m in parking fees and fines in just one year.

Isle of Wight Radio can reveal between April 2008 and March 2009 the local authority made £3,990,828. Yet it costs less than £2m to run the service. 30,355 penalty charge notices were issued for the same period – 6,304 of them were challenged which equates to about 20%. (more…)

ECO ISLAND? THE 3 FOLLIES OF APPLEY

A classic Isle of Wight council cock-up.  The cost, both to the council tax payer and the environment, of installing this composting facility that is so ludicrously small it is pointless and unusable in a park of several acres, is a clear demonstration of how wasteful and out of touch they are.

This is ill conceived, probably the result of an overindulgent business lunch at the council tax payers expense, it isn’t fit for purpose and even if it was given where it is situated any residue would flow straight down the hill. It has been put here for the purpose of appearing to be acting in an environmentally friendly fashion and to impress the old boys network that awards Green Flags to public parks.

Note the token grass clippings that have been put in it,no doubt following orders from the top, to make it appear as if in use….. THEN LOOK AT THE REAL DUMPING GROUND!

We need informed independents, not idiots reading from a pre-determined script so they can sing in unison. Expose them and the damage they’ve done to our school system and our eco island image (the one thing that could resurrect the Island economy long term).

Get them out and watch how this island progresses/regenerates
